Light House Award

Emily and her best friend were selected by their principal to speak to the Calgary Board of Education school board trustees about their experience with "Open Minds," a program that their school has had the privilege of being part of for the past few years.  Last year, their class spent a week at the zoo learning about the animals and then threading their experiences throughout the year, as part of their curriculum.  It's a great program and experience that the teachers also put a lot of work into and that the kids value.  Emily spoke for two minutes in front of about 50 people.  She was pretty excited and not nervous at all.  The 'fear of speaking' in public did not apply to her or her friend.  Way to go, girls!

Karate Kid

We all know that Liam is a pretty physical boy.  He loves sports and is good at them.  He is also pretty stubborn and competitive, so of course karate seems like a logical activity for him (I am hoping the discipline will speak to him).  He is also currently into a show called 'Kickin It' which is about young men and karate.   Good thing we have a 'dojo' across the street from us that offered a month of free sessions before committing.  Bonus was a free 'gi' too.  He's in.
